Goldpanning on Chicken Creek
Using picks and shovels, gold prospectors discovered gold on Chicken Creek in 1886. Later the F.E. Gold Company operated the Pedro Dredge on the lower two miles of Chicken Creek from 1959 to 1967. After 1967, a number of small placer mining operations continued to find gold in Chicken Creek. Gold is still being mined here and in the Forymile River area.
Take part in Chicken's longstanding gold history and strike it rich. We'll set you up with free goldpanning on Chicken Creek.
Tours of Historic Town of Chicken and Tisha's Schoolhouse
Today, there is a lot more to Chicken than appears from the roadway. Guided tours take people through the Historic Town of Chicken, which is a living museaum of Gold Rush and Alaskan Frontier history.
Tisha is the name given to Chicken's most famous inhabitant, Anne Hobbs Purdy. Tisha came to Chicken to teach the local children in the late 1920's. She later co-wrote a book recounting how she faced the difficulties of a close-set community, prejudices against natives, and the hard winter.
